Chance encounters are an important part of enjoying wildlife. After two return trips to where I found the Purple Emperor butterfly, I have not seen it again. To see it as I did on the path by my feet was just amazing good luck.

But I did find a Spotted Flycatcher pair in the woods close by this afternoon and while waiting very quietly for better views, two Great Spotted Woodpeckers flew in to the base of a tree and starting tapping away - an adult and juvenile. I will try again for the butterfly as the species tend to be territorial but a bit of me knows this really was a very lucky encounter....right time, right place.
