A quick visit.

After ten days away on a birding trip I shot over to our wood this morning for a quick look around, and suddenly its all green and lush. At this time of the year, it all changes at a real pace and each visit brings something new. As I drove down the main track a buck Roe Deer stepped out of the undergrowth and lingered long enough to allow a couple of quick photos. We don't often see deer around the wood so this was a bit of a treat. We know they are there as we see the nibbled stems and their footprints but Roe Deer, unlike the larger Fallow Deer are well camouflaged and go around quietly, or their own or in pairs rather than herds. They are far less destructive and pretty secretive. This one was not in any great rush to hide itself sauntering ahead of the car until I made the mistake of trying to open the door to get a better photograph - always a mistake. I wondered if there was a doe around with a youngster, hiding in the undergrowth.

And as I left the wood a pair of Red-legged Partridges were feeding beside the main track; I have seen them there before but not often so it was another valued chance encounter. Red-legged are sometimes called French Partridges as they are not native to these isles having been introduced from the continent for shooting.
